Remedies for Vastu Dosha

Are There Remedies for Vastu Dosha in Ancient Vastu Shastra Texts?

When we ask whether ancient Vastu Shastra texts prescribe remedies for Vastu Dosha, one important principle becomes clear if we study these texts from the beginning: just as Ayurveda follows the principle “Prevention is better than cure,” similar principles and rules are found in the ancient texts of Vastu Shastra.

However, when we study these ancient texts carefully and “read between the lines,” we come across certain messages and principles. Based on these principles, it is possible to correct certain defects in already constructed homes according to the traditional knowledge of Vastu Shastra. This article discusses such remedies.

Under the guidance and blessings of respected Maggirwar Sir, Dr. Dhundiraj Pathak and Dr. Shrikrishna Jugnu, I had the opportunity to learn several practical, experience-based Vastu remedies. After practically implementing these remedies over the last twenty-five years, I realized the importance of studying our ancient traditions.

There are at least 80 to 100 traditional texts in the Vastu Shastra tradition. If these texts are collectively studied and compiled, they could provide enough material for several books dedicated exclusively to Vastu remedies.
In my book “Sukhi Vastu,” I have compiled knowledge from 39 such texts. I was inspired to write this book by my revered teacher, Dr. Shrikrishna Jugnu of Udaipur.

While teaching Geopathic Stress, Dr. Avinash Kulkarni and I also studied the subject of locating underground water. We subsequently started training workshops for people interested in locating borewells and wells. Later, based on the Brihat Samhita, I wrote a book titled “Dakargal.” It has been useful to many water dowsers in Maharashtra.
The book explains ancient principles attributed to Saraswat and Manu Rishis regarding how underground water can be identified through signs observed on the surface of the land.

Vastu and the Four Fundamental Concepts

In this article, I discuss principles related to Garbha Vinyasa described in texts such as Manasara, Matsya Purana, Aparajita Pruccha and Mayamatam, along with remedies associated with different directions.

Before discussing Vastu defects, let us first understand the four definitions of Vastu described in the Mayamatam.

The land on which a house is constructed is called Vastu, while the structure constructed on the selected land is called Bhavana.

According to the Mayamatam, Vastu can be understood through four important aspects:

  1. Bhumi – Land
Bhumi refers to the land on which a house is to be constructed. The land is selected after examining factors such as its slope, shape, soil and other characteristics.
  2. Bhavana – Building
While constructing a building, its shape, directions and internal arrangement are considered.
  3. Bedroom
A person spends approximately one-third of their life in bed. Therefore, the bedroom is given considerable importance in the Mayamatam tradition.
  4. Vehicle
The vehicle through which we travel or move from one place to another also requires proper care, maintenance and cleanliness.

The Importance of Garbha Vinyasa

Chapter 12 of the Mayamatam describes certain rituals and procedures to be performed on the land while constructing a house.
When a woman is pregnant, special nutrition such as folic acid and calcium may be provided for the development of the foetus. She is given nutritious and enjoyable food, and special care is taken of her.
Similarly, while constructing a house or building, Garbha Vinyasa is described as a process intended to strengthen and sanctify the foundation of the building.

According to the traditional description, Garbha Vinyasa is performed below the ground, at a depth of approximately one Purusha, or around seven to eight feet, at the location where the foundation is being prepared.

Ideally, this process is performed during the construction of the house. Those who construct their homes after following such traditional Vastu practices are considered fortunate.

However, when a house has already been constructed and Vastu defects are believed to have developed, certain principles are found in texts such as Mayamatam, Manasara, Samarangana Sutradhara, Matsya Purana and Aparajita Pruccha.

To apply these principles, one must study, contemplate and understand the relevant traditional सूत्रs.

After examining a particular property, if a direction has been extended, cut, disturbed or its internal arrangement has been incorrectly designed, a Vastu defect may be identified according to these traditional principles.

Interestingly, the ancient texts generally do not provide a large number of specific remedies for correcting such defects. One notable exception is the Manushyalaya Chandrika, which describes Panchashirsha Sthapana when a column, beam or wall is placed at the heart or navel of the Vastu Purusha—that is, at the Brahmasthan.

Panchashirsha or Panchapashumukha Sthapana is described in texts such as Manushyalaya Chandrika and Vastu Vidya.

In South India, Nambudiri Brahmins perform Panchashirsha Sthapana as an elaborate ritual. Rangoli designs are created using various natural colours, the space is decorated with flowers, and the 45 deities associated with the Vastu are invoked and worshipped through Panchopachara Puja.
It is a complex and lengthy process, traditionally performed with great devotion by practitioners following the South Indian tantric tradition.

Using Traditional Principles for Vastu Remedies
When I observed this ritual, I noticed the deep devotion with which the practitioners invoked the 45 deities.

Natural colours made from leaves, roasted rice, turmeric, kumkum and rice flour are used to create the traditional designs. Panchashirsha Sthapana is then performed as a traditional remedy for Vastu defects.

Apart from this exceptional ritual, very few specific defect-removal procedures appear to be directly prescribed in the ancient Vastu texts.

However, by studying and contemplating the ancient texts, it can be understood that some of the procedures described for Garbha Vinyasa may also be applied as traditional remedial principles for defects that arise in existing buildings.

While doing so, certain important factors need to be considered.

Direction-Wise Vastu Remedies

Northeast Direction – Ishanya

If a Vastu defect exists in the Northeast direction—for example, a toilet, a cut in the Northeast corner, or an elevated portion in the Northeast—traditional Manasara-based practices describe the use of crystal gemstones along with specified grains, metals, medicinal substances, minerals and fragrances.

Removing a toilet from the Northeast is considered particularly beneficial according to this approach. However, in modern apartment culture, removing an existing toilet is often not practical.

In such situations, the traditional approach described here suggests using metals, grains, minerals, medicinal substances and fragrances as remedial संस्कार in that location.

Southeast Direction – Agneya

If there is a water tank in the Southeast, a cut in the Southeast direction, a well or borewell in the Southeast, or an entrance from the Southeast corner, the Manasara tradition describes gemstone placement as a remedy.

Accordingly, coral, copper, specified grains, minerals and medicinal substances may be placed in the Southeast according to the prescribed method and an appropriate auspicious time.

The text states that such practices may help reduce the perceived defects associated with the Southeast direction.

The quantity and proportions of the materials to be used depend on certain calculations related to the size of the property.

Quantity of Gemstones and Materials

According to the experience described in the article, for a house or flat measuring approximately 1,000 square feet, at least 100 carats of gemstones may be required as a deposit.

Along with this, the specified grains, metals, minerals, medicinal substances and fragrances are used.

The article states that noticeable results have been observed within approximately 90 days after performing these संस्कार.

Entrance at the Corner

The traditional principle states:

“Dwara Koneshu Varjayet Sarvada.”

In Vastu Shastra, entrances located directly at the corners of the four sub-directions are traditionally discouraged.
Although entrances can exist in all four primary directions, they are traditionally recommended only in specific positions.
In modern apartment architecture, however, entrances are sometimes positioned close to corners.

In such cases, the traditional remedy described here is to install a wooden threshold and place the gemstones, metals, grains, minerals, medicinal substances and fragrances associated with the respective direction beneath the threshold.

For apartments, where major structural changes may not be possible, this method is presented as an alternative.
The article states that such methods have been practically experienced over the past twenty years.

In some apartments, a small portion of the flooring is opened and materials such as a Swastika Yantra, Akshata, directional gemstones and other substances are placed beneath the floor. The area is then closed and the direction is traditionally energized.

Although this process is complex, the article states that people living in such apartments have experienced benefits from this traditional Vastu-remedy process for periods of approximately ten to fifteen years.

Kirlian photography has also been used in some such cases to compare the property before and after the remedial process. According to the observations described in the article, differences were noticed in the aura field and an increase in what was interpreted as positive energy was observed.

To perform these remedies, the article emphasizes studying the Garbha Vinyasa chapters of the Manasara and Mayamatam. The first step should be a detailed Vastu inspection to identify which directions contain defects.

The appropriate traditional संस्कार can then be performed in the relevant direction.

The article states that such remedies may not necessarily provide permanent results but may provide relief from perceived Vastu defects for approximately 15 to 20 years.

These methods are also described as financially more practical than changing one’s entire house.
Simply advising someone to move to another house may seem easy, but people choose their homes for many important reasons: proximity to schools and colleges, workplaces, businesses, neighbourhoods and social surroundings.

Therefore, suddenly changing one’s home can be an extreme solution.

The traditional remedies described in the above-mentioned texts can instead be explored as methods of addressing perceived defects while continuing to live in the existing home.

East Direction – Purva

If there is a defect in the East direction, particularly if the East side of the building is closed or elevated while the West is comparatively lower, traditional Vastu principles consider this a possible defect.

Other examples include a toilet, garbage, old belongings, scrap material, a storeroom, unnecessary objects or a septic tank located in the East.

According to the Garbha Vinyasa principles described in the Mayamatam and Manasara, crystal gemstones along with specified substances such as Lahi, Trishula plant material and silver, together with a copper Swastika, may be used.

A small pit may be prepared in the East, and the specified materials may be deposited according to the area of the building and the prescribed proportions.

The article recommends performing the process at an appropriate auspicious time under the guidance of a knowledgeable priest.

According to the traditional Vastu perspective presented in the article, these practices are believed to support:
